PhD Qualifying Examination "A Survey on Scalable Video Coding" By Mr. Huihui Li Abstract: With the emergence of wireless networks and increasing demand of multimedia information on the Internet, scalable video coding techniques will play more and more important roles in video transmission. In this paper, we first introduce traditional scalable video coding methods such as SNR, spatial, temporal scalabilities to illustrate the basic features of layered video stream. However, those traditional scalable coding techniques are all coarse granularity, to meet more flexible network requirements, fine granularity scalability (FGS) is introduced. We analyze the advantage as well as recent development (PFGS) of FGS. In addition, we identify some possible future research directions that may improve the performance of scalable video coding methods.
