MPhil Thesis Defence "Analysis and Synthesis of the Chinese Souna" By Mr. Po-Hei Wong Abstract The spectral properties of the Chinese Souna, an instruments with history of around 2000 years, are considered. Additive Synthesis is the simplest and purest synthesis technique of modeling based on the summation of sine wave but this technique requires data storage and long computation time to adequately synthesize the tone. A modified Douglas-Puecker line simplification algorithm was introduced, with a 87% data reduction. Also, we further our study on data reduction by using group additive synthesis. Two models of choosing the envelope to represent the group were introduced. A Csound implementation for synthesizing the Chinese souna tones has been developed. Listening tests showed that the weighted model is the best in comparison with the other models.
