PhD Qualifying Examination "A Survey on Radio Resources Management in UMTS W-CDMA Networks" By Mr. Hailiang Wu Abstract: W-CDMA is the most widely adopted air interface in third generation systems, it provides high user data rates and supports services with variable data rates and different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The capacity of the W-CDMA network is mainly limited by the interference from the all of users in the system. To reduce the interference from other users and maintain the SIR in a target level is important for services with QoS. The radio resource management, including power control, packet data scheduling, call admission control, load control and handover control, plays an important role in increasing system capacity and throughput, and guaranteeing QoS for users. This survey studies the principle, characteristics, and architecture of UMTS wideband CDMA system, and then investigates the radio resource management strategies, especially the call admission control algorithms and packet data scheduling schemes for wideband CDMA networks.
