PhD Qualifying Examination "Short-Term Travel Time Prediction on Road Networks" By Mr. Bin Liu Abstract: Intelligent route choice for a traveler is based not only on the geographical distance of routes but also on traffic conditions. The latter factor can actually turn the geographically shortest path into the "longest" one to travel (e.g., traffic jam). This makes traditional shortest path algorithms inapplicable. To remedy this situation, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) predict short-term travel times of possible routes, based on historical and current information. This report surveys travel time prediction techniques and related work in the Kalman filtering, time series analysis, transportation networks and spatio-temporal databases.
