The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Department of Computer Science PhD Qualifying Examination "A Survey on Networked Virtual Environments" By Mr. Kwun-Tai Hui Abstract: Networked Virtual Environments (NVEs) are make-believe worlds in which participants can interact in real-time. This survey paper introduces NVEs and reviews research works in this area, covering systems from the military, academic and commercial sectors. Major challenges in NVE design and how they are tackled are discussed next. First we consider the network architecture and shared state management. Then scalability and security issues are covered. This paper concludes with suggestions for further researches.
