---------------------------------------------------------------------- Speaker: Professor David H.C. Du Computer Science and Engineering Department University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Title: "The Researfch Trend in Scalable Servers and Storage Systems" Date: Thursday, June 20, 2002 Time: 11:00 am to 12 noon Venue: Room 2303 (Phase I, via lift nos. 17/18) HKUST Abstract: Due to a number of fast growing applications like streaming video, data mining, and scientific visualization, the demand for larger and faster storage systems has been dramatically increased. In this talk I will present our past and current research activities that are related to scalable servers and storage systems. We have taken a fully vertically integrated approach to carry out our research. From applications to scalable servers, we have focused on using PC/Workstation clusters and InfiniBand based servers to support streaming video, data mining and scientific visualization. From servers to network attached storage and storage area networks, we have focused on the performance and usage of FC-AL, SSA and iSCSI (SCSI over Internet). Our goal is to design and develop storage systems that can take advantages of the newly developed technologies including active disks, object storage devices, disk-based XOR, iSCSI and silicon-based TCP/IP offload engine. I intend to give a high-level overview of our effort in these subjects. ********************* Biography: David H.C.
