The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Department of Computer Science PhD Qualifying examination "A survey on Expertise Location" By Mr. Jie MEI There are a number of reasons for organizations and individuals to know who knows what for various purposes such as seeking help, team formation or project launching. One of the most interesting challenges in the Knowledge Management research community is to enable expertise management. This survey summarizes, categorizes, and compares existing research efforts on expertise location, which is a basic and key part of expertise management. The paper begins with a discussion of important issues related to expertise location. Similarities among expertise location approaches are highlighted, by categorizing them into three main methods: social/referral network, corporate memory and ontology-based approaches. For each method, the different constituent techniques are described with specific examples from the literature. Finally, some possible directions for future research are also proposed.
