PhD Qualifying Examination "A Survey on Replica Placement in Wide-Area Distributed Systems" By Mr. Huicheng Chi Abstract: With the widespread installation of content distribution networks (CDNs) in the Internet, data replication has been used extensively to improve the accessibility of Web sites. Existing work has focused on request routing techniques for efficiently redirecting user requests to appropriate servers. In this survey, we investigate the replica placement problem in wide-area distributed systems. First, we survey the theoretical background and introduce a framework to model different issues in replica placement. In this framework, the replica placement is combined with consistency management and various quality of services (QoS) issues. Applications to both fixed-topology Internet and the emerging peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are discussed. Finally, we suggest a list of promising future research directions.
