PhD Qualifying Examination "User interaction in a context-aware environment" By Miss Dan Hong Abstract: With the invention of new interaction devices, user interaction has moved beyond the desktop and become a trend of ongoing developing. The context on where the device is being used has joined as an integral part of the input during an interaction. The inclusion of context provides convenience and efficiency to users during the new interaction. The traditional human-computer interface (HCI) theories are not totally suitable for context-aware interactions. The development of context-aware applications requires new paradigms. In this survey, we review the past research and summarize the results on design, prototyping and evaluation techniques for context-aware applications. We also identify some challenges and propose future work in this paper.
