Most current search engines return the same results to all users who ask the same query. However, this kind of service is not satisfactory, for the reason that different users may have different information needs even for the same query. Therefore, personalized Web search has recently attracted great attention from the research community. In this survey, we focus on the latest technology in the area of personalized Web search. In particular, we classify the latest technologies into three categories, namely, link-based, content-based and function-based personalized Web search, based on what part of Web search process the personalization is performed. We individually review the methodologies and algorithms of each categories in respective sections, with some emphasis on function-based personalization. We then briefly overview a relevant field, Web site personalization, to make our discussion complete. Finally, we identify several promising directions for future work.
