PhD Qualifying Examination "A Survey on Digital Painting Technology" Mr. Siu Hang Chu Abstract: Many artists have adopted digital painting due to the many possibilities it offers that are not matched by conventional media. These include the ability to undo, mix different simulated media, save the artwork at different stages, and the readiness for digital publishing. As an art tool, the computer also bears great potential in the development of new art forms and techniques simply not possible in the real world. This paper presents a review of the development of digital painting technology, with an emphasis on the state-of-the-art natural media simulation techniques. Both commercial software packages and research efforts are discussed. A brief account of hardware input devices is also included. This survey is concluded with an outlook on the future development of digital painting.
