When two or more packets attempt to leave a node on the same output port, on the same wavelength, at the same time, then contention occurs. Contention can be resolved by time buffering, wavelength conversion, or space deflection. We provide a unified study of a network of optical routers, which include contention resolutions in all three (time, wavelength, and space) dimensions. Specifically, we show (1) how to accommodate all three dimensions of contention resolution in an integrated optical router, (2) how the performance of the three dimensions compare with one another, (3) how various combined schemes (incorporating more than one dimension) can be architected and how they perform. Furthermore, we propose an electrical-optical hybrid contention-resolution scheme that can further improve the network performance. ***************** Biography: Shun Yao received B.E. in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, P.
