------------------------------------------------------------------------ Speaker: Prof. Lionel M. Ni Professor and Head Department of Computer Science Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Topic: "From VLSI Architecture, Supercomputer Architecture, and Router Architecture to Location-Sensing Architecture" Date: Monday, 23 September 2002 Time: 4:00 - 5:00pm Venue: Lecture Theater F (Leung Yat Sing Lecture Theater, near lift nos. 25/26) HKUST Abstract: This talk will give an overview of network architecture-related research that I have been involved in the past two decades. The focus will be on two current projects. The EMPOWER project provides a highly configurable, scalable, and low cost emulation environment that is capable of emulating multi-host network topologies, including hosts, routers, and links as well as routing modifications. The SWIM project intends to build an indoor location-sensing network using Bluetooth and RF technologies. By integrating location-sensing networks with wireless networks, this environment will be useful to support various mobile commerce applications. ********************** Biography: Lionel M. Ni earned his Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, in 1980. He has been professor and head of the Computer Science Department at HKUST since July 2002. Before that he was professor in Computer Science and Engineering Department at Michigan State University. His research interests include parallel architectures, distributed systems, high-speed networks, and pervasive computing. A fellow of IEEE, Dr. Ni has chaired many professional conferences and has received a number of awards for authoring outstanding papers. His paper (with his former student, Chris Glass) "The Turn Model for Adaptive Routing" was selected as one of the 41 most significant impact papers in the last 25 years in computer architecture area in 1998. He also won the Michigan State University Distinguished Faculty Award in 1994.
