------------------------------------------------------------------------- Speaker: Dr. John Lui Department of Computer Science & Engineering Chinese University of Hong Kong Topic; "The Reliable Multimedia Streaming Server (RMSS+): the good, the bad and the ugly" Date: Monday, 11 March 2002 Time: 4:00pm - 5:00pm Venue: Lecture Theater F (Leung Yat Sing Lecture Theater, near lift nos. 25/26) HKUST ABSTRACT: Multimedia streaming is one of the most important requirements in broadband services. In this talk, we will present the design, analysis and implementation of the reliable multimedia streaming server (RMSS+). The RMSS+ is a free software (under GPL) developed by a group of dedicated and fun-filled students from the Computer Science and Engineering Department in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The purpose of the RMSS+ is to provide unicast or multicast streaming and reliable services for viewing different multimedia contents. This implies that different variable bit rate multimedia objects with vastly different bandwidth requirements can be scheduled under the same server. Currently, the RMSS+ server is providing the following broadband services in CUHK: a) movie-on-demand, b) lecture-on-demand, c) colloquium series, d) musical juke-box, e) video multicasting services...,etc. In this talk, we will present the design philosophy of the RMSS+, including the file system, disk scheduler, admission control policy, network transmission, buffer management and object synchronization technique. We will also discuss some of the short-comings of the RMSS+ system as well as some exciting extensions. ******************* Biography: John Chi-Shing Lui received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA. After his graduation, he naively thought that a career in a research lab would be great so he joined the IBM Almaden Research Laboratory/San Jose Laboratory and participated in a parallel I/O architecture and file system research project. After spending 3 years in IBM, he decided to try a career in academic and he joined the CS&E Department in CUHK. So far, he is having a time of his life, working on various exciting multimedia and Internet research projects with some talented students in CUHK. Prof. Lui has been a visiting professor in computer science departments at UCLA, Columbia Univ, Univ. of Maryland at College Park, Purdue Univ. and Univ. of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is an affiliated member of the Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC) at University of Southern California (USC). His current research interests are in data communication networks, distributed multimedia systems, OS design issues and performance evaluation theory. His personal interests include films and general reading (currently, finishing the last chapter of "Lord of the Rings").
