----------------------------------------------------------------------- Speaker: Professor Torleiv Klove Visiting Professor Department of Information Engineering The Chinese University of Hong Kong Topic: "Error Detecting Codes" Date: Monday, 15 April 2002 Time: 4:00pm - 5:00pm Venue: Lecture Theater F (Leung Yat Sing Lecture Theater, near lift nos. 25/26) HKUST ABSTRACT: Errors occur! Even when we do our best to avoid errors, they still happen from time to time. In particular, there will be errors in data. Errors may have many causes, for example noise during transmission, malfunction of magnetic recording devices, etc. Knowing that errors will occur, it is important to recognize them, that is, detect that our data has errors. This is done by introducing redundancy in the data. In this talk we will give an overview of error detecting code, from simple schemes like parity checks and bar-codes to more advanced codes. We will introduce measures which can be used to evaluate the performance of error detecting codes and describe some of the still open problems in the area. ******************** Biography: Torleiv Klove got his degrees (cand. mag. 1966, cand. real. 1967, dr. philos. 1971) from the University of Bergen (UiB), Norway, and he has been affiliated with UiB since, from 1984 as professor of informatics. He has spent research leaves at Atlas Computer Labs. (UK), Cambridge University (UK), and University of Hawaii (USA). His is presently visiting professor at the Department of Information Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research over the years has covered a number of fields: number theory and combinatorics, formal languages, coding theory, cryptography. His main research area over the last 25 years has been error detecting code and error correcting codes. He is co-author of the book "Error detecting codes", Kluwer Acad. Press 1995.
