--------------------------------------------------------------- Speaker: Qiong Luo University of Wisconsin-Madison Topic: "Caching for Web-Based Database Applications" Date: Monday, 4 March 2002 Time: 4:00pm - 5:00pm Venue: Lecture Theater F (Leung Yat Sing Lecture Theater, near lift nos. 25/26) HKUST ABSTRACT: While web caching proxy servers are essential for improving the performance and scalability of general web sites, their current implementations, which only cache static web objects, are insufficient for the web sites that are backed with database servers. To address this problem, we explore how to add a query processing capability to proxy servers so that they can efficiently provide caching for these web sites. I will mainly talk about our form-based proxy caching framework. A key observation in this work is that HTML form-based interfaces, which are commonly provided by database-backed web sites, enable a useful variety of query caching techniques that would be impractical or impossible for arbitrary SQL queries. We have identified a common class of web queries, which we term Top-N Conjunctive Keyword Queries, and studied form-based active caching techniques for them. If time permits, I will briefly describe my early work on active query caching in an existing research prototype proxy as well as my most recent work on table level caching in application servers using a commercial DBMS (DB2). **************** Biography: Qiong (Joan) Luo is a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Sciences at University of Wisconsin-Madison, working in the database area under the guidance of Prof. Jeff Naughton. Her dissertation research has focussed on advanced proxy caching techniques for improving the performance and scalability of web-based database applications. As part of her thesis work, Qiong participated in the DBCache Project led by Dr. C. Mohan at IBM Almaden Research Center in the Fall of 2001. Qiong expects to earn her Ph.D. in May 2002.
