The JDK 1.1 made several enhancements to the java.net package.

These enhancements are summarized in the 1.1 notes we've added to the Custom Networking and Security trail. In addition, we now provide 1.1 versions of the examples in the networking trail, so that you can see how the changes in java.net might effect your own programs.
