The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a world-class research intensive university that focuses on science, technology and business as well as humanities and social science. HKUST offers an international campus, and a holistic and interdisciplinary pedagogy to nurture well-rounded graduates with global vision, a strong entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking. Over 80% of our research work were rated “Internationally excellent” or “world leading” in the Research Assessment Exercise 2020 of Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee. We were ranked 3rd in Times Higher Education’s Young University Rankings 2022, and our graduates were ranked 23rd worldwide and among the best from universities from Asia in Global University Employability Survey 2021.
The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) is a multi-disciplinary organisation established by statute in 1967, to promote productivity excellence through relentless drive of world-class advanced technologies and innovative service offerings to support Hong Kong enterprises. Being a key enabler and catalyst of innovation, applied technology and value creation, HKPC facilitates Hong Kong’s reindustrialisation empowered by Industry 4.0 and Enterprise 4.0, as well as to develop smart and green living applications for bolstering Hong Kong as an international innovation and technology hub and a smart city.
The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the RWTH Aachen Campus from Germany join forces to establish the Hong Kong Industrial Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Centre (FLAIR). Located at the Hong Kong Science Park, FLAIR is part of AIR@InnoHK, which is one of the two world-class research clusters being established by InnoHK Clusters of the HKSAR Government, to support Hong Kong in developing into an international innovation & technology hub. As the sole founder, HKPC will work together with RWTH Aachen Campus, the major collaborator of FLAIR, by bundling their strengths and repertoire of resources in technical expertise, networks, innovation and patents etc. to set up the FLAIR and support its operation.
On 13 Jun 2022, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (“HKUST”) and the Hong Kong Productivity Council (“HKPC”) announced the establishment of the HKUST-HKPC Joint Research Lab for Industrial AI and Robotics (“Joint Lab”).
This Joint Lab aims to develop innovative industrial technologies that can address the technical challenges and provide practical solutions with the adoption of AI and robotics technology, helping to enhance the productivity of industries in Hong Kong and simultaneously fostering intelligent and advanced manufacturing and industrial innovation and technology (I&T) talent development.
On 19 Dec 2022, 1st Academic Workshop of HKUST-HKPC Joint Research Lab for Industrial AI and Robotic (INAIR Lab) was successfully held. The workshop outlined the innovative vision of INAIR Lab to address technical challenges faced by the manufacturers and provide practical solutions with the adoption of AI and robotics technologies. It also allowed project representatives to update one another research milestones and to exchange technical knowledge.
On 19 Dec 2023, 2nd Academic Workshop for HKUST-HKPC INAIR Lab was successfully held. Since June 2022, the INAIR Lab has launched 12 projects, covering intelligent inspection, intelligent manufacturing and other fields, including R&D software successfully used by industrial partners. Representatives of each project presented their technical achievements and new project vision, and actively engaged in Q&A session.
