HKUST BDI’s First Virtual Career Fair Provides Novel Interactive Experience for Students to Gain Latest Insights and Career Prospects in Data Science and AI

HKUST Big Data Institute (BDI) successfully organized its first ever online career fair on 27 April 2020, attracting over 340 participants. The event brought together industry experts from renowned technology enterprises including Alibaba, Ant Financial, Baidu, ByteDance, Didi Chuxing, JD.com and WeBank to speak on emerging technology development and applications in big data, AI, blockchain, Financial Technology, etc.


Speaking at the opening remarks, Prof. Tim Cheng, Dean of Engineering of HKUST expressed sincere gratitude to our distinguished speakers and partners from the industry for sharing the latest insights and career prospects in data science and AI as well as first hand job info with HKUST students. Dean Cheng also encouraged students to seize the opportunities, leverage on the University’s resources and make the most out of it during this challenging time. In the welcoming remarks, Prof. Lei Chen, Director of Big Data Institute and Professor of Department of Computer Science and Engineering of HKUST said the BDI Career Fair enabled companies to recruit talented students from HKUST, while on the other hand, the platform allowed HKUST to showcase its education efforts to nurture the future talents. This helps to achieve a win-win situation between HKUST and the industry.


During the virtual career fair, apart from sharing technology insights, participating industry partners introduced job opening opportunities and advised useful tips in job searching and interview to our students. At the end of each presentation session, both technology experts and HR representatives communicated with our students and answered questions from the audience through real-time Q&A dialog box on the online platform.


BDI held the virtual career fair in an interactive format for the first time in light of the current situation. Aligning with BDI’s missions and objectives to foster university-industry collaboration and develop educational programs to nurture big data professionals, this event offered a safe and effective platform for students to gain latest insights and keep abreast of the hiring trends in technology field from the industry, helping them to prepare for future careers and employment.
