PhD Student LIN Yong Received Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD Fellowship
Computer Science and Engineering PhD student LIN Yong was awarded a 2023 Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD fellowship, becoming one of the 22 recipients in acritical intelligence and machine learning. He is also the only awardee from Hong Kong to receive this fellowship.
Supervised by Prof. Tong Zhang, Yong Lin interests in machine learning algorithms and theories, including sparsity, uncertainty, invariance, causality. He is particularly interested in improving the robustness of machine learning models to distributional shifts and its applications in computer visio, large language models and reinforcement learning. Recently, he and other researchers published a paper "A Holistic View of Label Noise Transition Matrix in Deep Learning and Beyond" and proposed a holistic view of existing T-estimation methods including those with or without anchor point assumptions and make the first effort to address this issue by proposing a novel T-estimation framework via the lens of bilevel optimization, and term it RObust Bilevel OpTimzation (ROBOT).
Yong was thrilled and humbled to receive this award. "This recognition inspires me to delve further into the exciting and ever-evolving realm of machine learning. Moving forward, I am committed to exploring ways to create more robust and adaptable models for the challenges posed by super large-scale machine learning systems." He would like to further express his sincere gratitude to his supervisor, Professor Tong Zhang. "His support and guidance have been invaluable to encourage me to pursue research that is foundational, practical and impactful. His mentorship has shaped my research trajectory!"
The Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD fellowship recognizes the contributions of researchers in computer science and engineering at the graduate and postgraduate level. Each Scholar receives funding as they pursue their PhD, internship opportunities, and mentorship with an Apple researcher in their field. Apple Scholars in AI/ML are selected based on their innovative research, record as thought leaders and collaborators, and commitment to advancing their respective fields.
Once again congratulation Lin Yong be an awardee of 2023 Apple Scholars in Al/ML PhD fellowship!
