HKUST Firebird Team Members Won Championship (金灣獎) in the Second Greater Bay Area Cybersecurity Competition — Hong Kong and Macao Division (第二屆灣區杯 - 港澳賽區)

We are proud to announce that the HKUST Firebird Cybersecurity Team, "HKCERT-GBAICERT", has recently won the Championship (金灣獎) in the Second Greater Bay Area Cybersecurity Competition - Hong Kong and Macao Division (第二屆灣區杯 - 港澳賽區).

Comprising current COMP 4633 students Jiang Kit Hoi, Kong Chi Yuen, and Ma Zheng Qing Isaac, the team showcased exceptional problem-solving skills and technical prowess. Competing in Guangzhou against a formidable field of 450 participants, our students navigated intense offensive and defensive cybersecurity challenges to secure an impressive score of 50,561.65 points. The team brought home the top prize of HK$30,000 and the prestigious "GBA talent certificate" (灣區人才證書).

About the competition

This year's competition pushed the boundaries of cybersecurity by focusing heavily on the cutting-edge field of AI security. Adopting the AWD Plus mode, the event introduced an AI Security Special Challenge for the first time. Participants were tested on AI vulnerability discovery, human-AI competition, and autonomous problem-solving by AI agents. On-site challenges were closely aligned with the Greater Bay Area’s rapidly growing industrial clusters, testing skills in low-altitude economy security, the Internet of Vehicles, the industrial Internet, blockchain, and mobile networks.

Golden victory for our team

Reflecting on their golden victory and their journey of growth, HKCERT-GBAICERT team member Kong Chi Yuen shared: "Last year, I participated in the first 'Bay Area Cup' competition and didn't win an award. Thanks to my subsequent internship experience in a cybersecurity-related department of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and participating in relevant course training at HKUST, we made a major breakthrough in this year's results."

This remarkable achievement highlights the dedication of our students and the strength of HKUST’s cybersecurity education in preparing them for real-world industry challenges. Congratulations to Kit Hoi, Chi Yuen, and Isaac on their phenomenal success!
