PhD Alumni Dr. Quanming Yao Selected as One of Hurun China Under 30s To Watch

CSE PhD Alumni Dr. Quanming Yao is selected to the Hurun China Under 30s To Watch 2021 list under the category Advanced Manufacturing. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University. Before that, he spent three years from a researcher to a senior scientist in 4Paradigm INC, where he set up and led the company's machine learning research team.

He obtained his Ph.D. degree at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. James Kwok and also received his bachelor's degree at HuaZhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in 2013.

With the research focus on machine learning, optimization algorithms and automated machine learning, Dr. Yao's works have published 40+ top-tier conference/journal papers been. His works have been cited by more than 30 IEEE Fellows, three of them (KDD 2017/NeurIPS 2018/CSUR 2020) are marked as top cited papers according to Google Scholar Metrics 2021. Besides, his work on automated feature engineering (AutoCross, KDD 2019) has been well commercialized into 4Paradigm's product; his work on automated knowledge graph learning (AutoSF, ICDE 2020) has been the top solution on the important Open Graph Benchmark.

Dr. Yao's work has been recognized with numerous awards including National Youth Talent Plan (China), Forbes 30 Under 30 (China), Young Scientist Awards (Hong Kong Institution of Science), and Google Fellowship (in machine learning).

Hurun China Under 30s To Watch is a list of China's most successful entrepreneurs under the age of 30. This year, 241 individuals in ten main industries were made into the list. The average age is 28, with 77% of them are male and 23% are female.
