The Future Professionals x UST Department of Computer Science and Engineering

On January 25, 2025, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering hosted the event “The Future Professionals x UST Department of Computer Science and Engineering” in collaboration with HKFYG. We welcomed 39 students from Form 3 to Form 5, including three participants from the Greater Bay Area, to our campus at HKUST.

The event began with an informative session titled "Discovering AI," where Dr. Desmond Tsoi, Associate Professor of Engineering Education, provided an overview of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, along with details about the admissions process for 2025 and beyond. The discussion included insights into Artificial Intelligence (AI), covering both foundational concepts and practical applications relevant to students. He emphasized the ethical considerations surrounding AI, fostering a thoughtful dialogue among participants.

Following the introductory session, we conducted a hands-on workshop titled “Mastering AI Gesture Control: Hands-On Workshop for Game Development.” In this workshop, participants learned to create their own pose detection AI models using Google Teachable Machine, enabling them to control game elements through gesture recognition.

To conclude the day, we arranged a campus tour for our guests, highlighting iconic locations at HKUST, including the Red Bird, Connect Bridge, Academic Building, Cheng Yu Tung Building, Shaw Auditorium, and Lee Shau Kee Building.

After the event, HKFYG expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided to the students, allowing them to explore the engineering school and gain insights into the admission process. Participants appreciated the chance to learn more about studying engineering at HKUST, and our guidance significantly aided their understanding of the application process. Our commitment to offering this educational experience has made a positive impact on the students’ academic aspirations.
