PhD Student Li Haotian Won the Prestigious 2022 Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) PhD Fellowship
CSE PhD LI Haotian won the prestigious 2022 Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) PhD Fellowship. Among all the 12 excellent candidates from the academic institutions in Asia Pacific Region like China, Japan and South Korea, Haotian is the only winner from Hong Kong SAR this year.
The MSRA Fellowship Program aims to support and encourage outstanding PhD students to realize their potential in the computer science related research fields through offering mentorship, research, networking and academic opportunities to them. In line with this, winners have the opportunity to participate into an internship to conduct advanced research at the Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing, receiving an individual mentorship program, attending academic conferences and cash support grant.
Supervised by Prof. Qu Huamin, Haotian's research interests comprise of data visualization, visual analytics and human-computer interaction. He has recognized the ability of humans are not capable to cope with the fast-growing trend of data analysis since the type and quantity data proliferated rapidly. Intelligent visual analysis tools have grown in popularity as a possible solution to the problem because they offer precise and quick data sensemaking by utilizing humans' high-bandwidth vision systems. Haotian aims to promote human-in-the-loop intelligent visual analysis with techniques from visualization, human-computer interaction, and machine learning. To accomplish the goal, he devoted himself to understand practical data visualization techniques and leveraging the findings to develop intelligent visual analysis tools. He wishes to contribute to an ecosystem where humans can perform effortlessly and adapt to visual data analysis with the support of machine intelligence through merging two lines of work.
He also shared that Prof. Qu is one of the most important factors winning this prize. He learned a lot from him in both research and life. Without Prof. Qu and mentors, it is impossible for him to win this award. At this moment, he would like to thank you Prof. Qu and his mentors.
Once again, Congratulations again to Haotian.
