Prof. Gary CHAN Awarded the Smart City Partnership Award 2022

Professor Gary Chan has been awarded the Smart City Partnership Award 2022 in the Smart Mobility category (香港智慧城市大獎 2022 (智慧出行)). This prestigious award recognizes Professor Chan's outstanding contributions to the field of smart city technology and his dedication to advancing research in this area.

Prof. Chan, who is also a co-founder of Smart Sensing Ltd, has been at the forefront of developing advanced smart IoT technologies that have the potential to revolutionize the way we live and work in cities. His team's project, "Outstanding Innovative Multi-function Edge AI Platform for Computer Vision Applications," has been recognized as a game-changing development in the field of smart mobility.

The platform developed by Prof. Chan's team employs a new family of patent-pending neural networks designed by his research group, termed FasterNet, which cuts down significantly on computation and memory access at edge devices to attain remarkable running speed without compromising accuracy. Furthermore, his team has developed an advanced deep learning framework called DnD (Divide and Distill) to greatly enhance the teacher-student knowledge distillation, model accuracy, and data efficiency. These developments have the potential to enable many novel smart city applications such as real-time privacy-preserving object recognition, people counting, traffic/flow/queue analysis, etc.

The Smart City Partnership Awards 2022 are organized by ET Net, and the award ceremony took place on February 27, 2023. Professor Chan shares the award jointly with Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre and Smart Sensing Ltd.
