Challenges in Mobile Sensor Networks: A Survey
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "Challenges in Mobile Sensor Networks: A Survey" Mr. Ji Luo Abstract: The growing technique of mobile sensors has enabled many new applications in wireless mobile sensor networks such as sea monitoring, animal migration and patrol defense. Unlike existing wireless sensor networks which are composed of static sensors, mobile sensor networks have a new feature of sensor mobility -- sensors are moving all the time. In this survey, we demonstrate that sensor mobility makes a great impact on most existing protocols of wireless sensor networks. We provides an overview of challenges in mobile sensor networks from three aspects: challenges for localization in mobile sensor networks, challenges for providing coverage services by mobile sensor networks and challenges for data collection in mobile sensor networks. By dividing the mobile sensors into two types: controllable sensors and uncontrollable sensors, we analyze the advantages which can be exploited from controllable sensors and the uncertainty brought by the uncontrollable sensors. This survey shows that sensor mobility brings a lot of challenges in mobile sensor networks but on the other side, it also provides big opportunities that we can leverage the sensor mobility to help in improving many protocols such as localization, coverage and data collection.
