A Survey on Self-Organizing Networks
PhD Qualifying Examination
Title: "A Survey on Self-Organizing Networks"
by
Mr. Wei WANG
Abstract:
As the demands for mobile phone access to the data services are expanding,
advantages in cellular services can be gained by offering enhanced user
experience through cost-effective broadband mobile access. The approach
towards cost-effective broadband mobile access is to maximize total
performance of networks, by providing not only wireless access with higher
performance but also more efficient operation and maintenance (O&M). The
vision of self-organizing networks (SON), which is in line with the views
of 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and the NGMN (Next Generation
Mobile Networks) group, is that future radio access networks needs to be
easier to plan, configure, manage, optimize and heal, in order to improve
O&M. It aims at reducing the cost of installation and management by
simplifying operational tasks through automated mechanisms, such as
self-configuration, self-optimization and self-healing. In this survey, we
first introduce some background knowledge about SON. Then we summarize key
challenges in applying SON in cellular systems from technical
perspectives. Existing research work and our considerations are presented
to give potential solutions for these challenges.
