A Survey on Music Emotion and Timbre
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "A Survey on Music Emotion and Timbre" by Mr. Chuck Jee CHAU Abstract: The emotion inside music becomes a popular research topic by the advancement of artificial intelligence for music recommendation based on emotion. Better music-making devices available on the market also allow interactive tools to easily generate sounds during performance with adjustable timbre for emotional effects. This paper is a survey of music emotion research, and the study of timbre of music instruments. The representation of emotion and timbre are both discussed. Recent research on the correlation of music emotion and timbral features is reviewed. A brief discussion on the preliminary study of non-sustaining instrument sounds is attached, and it provides a promising direction for further timbre research.
