Title: "Visualization Meets Crowdsourcing: A Survey"

Abstract:

Visualization is widely used to help people deal more effectively with
large amounts of data. Through transforming data into interactive visual
representations, visualization exploits the powerful processing
capabilities of the human visual perceptual system and enables people to
explore the data in an intuitive and user-friendly way. However,
visualization researchers are facing many challenges in the areas that
require high creativity or a large labor input, such as creative design,
quantitative evaluation, and collaborative analysis. Crowdsourcing is a
methodology to gather the collective wisdom of crowds to solve problems,
which can be exactly used to tackle the challenges facing visualization.
On the other hand, visualization, as a technique that harnesses human
perception and cognition capabilities to fulfill tasks, can also offer
remarkable opportunities in facilitating crowdsourcing in the areas such
as workflow design or quality control. Our purpose is to provide a
comprehensive survey on the combining of visualization and crowdsourcing
such that they can mutually benefit each other.

In this survey, we first introduce the motivation behind combining
visualization with crowdsourcing. Then we elaborate on some special
challenges facing data visualization and crowdsourcing. After that, we
present a new function-based taxonomy, based on which we classify the
relevant research work into three major categories (i.e.,
crowdsourcing-driven visualization, visualization-driven crowdsourcing,
and applications) and demonstrate the benefits of the combining of
visualization and crowdsourcing. Finally, we conclude with several
promising future research directions.
