A Survey on Situated Visual Design in Augmented Reality
PhD Qualifying Examination
Title: "A Survey on Situated Visual Design in Augmented Reality"
by
Mr. Ziming WU
Abstract:
Physical reality often serves as a reference, context and source for
inspiration and ideation in general design, but traditional digital design
interfaces, such as desktop UIs, separate users' design practice from
their own physical space. By bridging the gap between the virtual and
physical world, Augmented Reality (AR) offers the key value of
contextualizing physical environments within design context to facilitate
creation. Existing studies have shown situated design of visual content,
such as annotations, sketches, and 3D models, in AR, carries the potential
of producing high-quality outcomes in a more efficient and natural manner,
thereby expanding design opportunities for emerging applications.
This survey first introduces the concept of situated design and showcases
typical design targets ranging from 2D to 3D forms. Then, we review how
different advanced 3D interaction serves as design input, and further
demonstrate the new design space when bringing reality into design
context. After that, immersive displays used to output design outcomes are
discussed. Finally, we summarize the design considerations, highlight
existing problems to promote future research in this area.
