A Survey on Design Thinking in Collaborative Virtual Environment using Mixed Reality
PhD Qualifying Examination
Title: "A Survey on Design Thinking in Collaborative Virtual Environment
using Mixed Reality"
by
Mr. Pak Ming FAN
Abstract:
Problem solving has been regarded as one of the most important 21st
century skills for both students and employees to acquire. While there are
many problem-solving methodologies, design thinking has gained attention
lately and has been widely adopted in different areas such as education,
information technology, business, and medicine. On the other hand, mixed
reality (MR) technologies have been advancing rapidly in recent years. The
advancement in MR not only allowed better visualization of abstract ideas
but also improved the collaboration between different parties in virtual
environments.
This survey aims to study how collaborative virtual environments (CVEs)
enabled by mixed reality technologies can aid the design thinking process.
The different stages of the design thinking process are examined. A follow
up investigation on the nature and interaction capabilities of CVEs is
performed to identify which stages of the design thinking process can be
enhanced by CVEs. Current works on design thinking using CVEs are analyzed
to further discover areas for improvement and possible research directions
are summarized at the end of this survey.
