Contactless Human-centered Sensing: A Survey
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "Contactless Human-centered Sensing: A Survey" by Mr. Wentao XIE Abstract: Recent years have seen the surge of various wireless sensing technologies. Acoustic and WiFi signals are two kinds of wireless signals that are ubiquitously available in our daily lives. Leveraging these signals to perform sensing requires no dedicated hardware and it is easily integrated into the existing hardware. Therefore, acoustic-based sensing and WiFi-based sensing receive great attention from researchers. In this survey, state-of-the-art contactless human-centered sensing systems that use acoustic and WiFi signals are reviewed. We group the related works into the following six categories in terms of their applications: (i) device-based tracking and localization, (ii) device-free tracking and localization, (iii) human activity recognition, (iv) healthcare, (v) security and (vi) imaging. For each application, we compare the system design and performance between acoustic-based systems and WiFi-based systems, and we identify the research gaps in each of these topics. At the end of this survey, we draw a conclusion of this survey and point out the future research directions.
