Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface assisted Wireless Sensing: A Survey
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface assisted Wireless Sensing: A Survey" by Mr. Chenggao LI Abstract: Recent years have witnessed a rapid development of wireless sensing applications due to their non-intrusiveness, low-cost and pervasiveness. Communication technologies operating in different frequency bands, such as Wi-Fi, mmWave and RFID have been proposed to achieve many applications. However, although the sensing capabilities of these communication technologies have been almost developed, there are still some open issues that prevent wireless sensing applications from deploying in real life. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), as known as a promising technique in 6G communication, becomes popular as its strong ability to customize the wireless environment. Many researchers realize its potential capabilities can be used to improve the performance of wireless sensing. In this survey, we first introduce the principle and existing testbeds of RIS. Then we explain the preliminaries of wireless sensing and review the related research categorized in terms of their applications. Next, we introduce RIS assisted smart applications from two perspectives of communication and sensing scenarios. What’s more, we also introduce our RIS prototype and ongoing research about RIS-aided multiuser indoor localization as our first attempt on RIS assisted wireless sensing. Finally, we point out future potential directions and summarize our survey.
