A Survey of Visual Analytics for AI-informed Data-driven Decision Making
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "A Survey of Visual Analytics for AI-informed Data-driven Decision Making" by Mr. Rui SHENG Abstract: Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in developing and applying artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to analyze and process big data for decision making. However, several problems of using AI during the decision making process have emerged. For example, these technologies usually lack interpretability and cannot convey proper uncertainties to users. To address those problems, many visual analytics approaches have been proposed to enhance humans’ understanding and exploration of AI. We build our survey upon 44 papers collected from the main conferences and journals in data visualization and human-computer interaction. In this survey, we systematically study how visual analytics can help humans use data-driven AI technologies to make decisions. We target the visual analytics systems that can help users to use AI technologies in evaluating and selecting decision alternatives. This survey is organized around the relationships among decision making, AI, and visual analytics. First, we summarize six challenges that decision makers might face when evaluating and selecting different alternatives. Then, we reveal how AI works in these scenarios and what challenges AI will bring. Finally, we propose seven tasks of visual analytics to address the problems brought by AI during the decision making process. Based on the taxonomy, we discuss several future opportunities for further exploration of visual analytics for AI-informed data-driven decision making.
