PhD Qualifying Examination

Title: "Smart Sensing for Home Rehabilitation: A Survey"

Abstract:

Faced with the challenges of an aging population, rehabilitation is an
essential and key research area. Whether it is functional decline with age
or affected by the disease, people should adopt some rehabilitation
behaviors to improve their quality of life (QoL). Due to the increase in
demand and the lack of rehabilitation resources, telerehabilitation (TR)
has become a research hotspot. In recent years, with the development of
Internet of Things (IoT) technology, its rich perception methods and
ubiquitous sensing capabilities have made healthcare increasingly
intelligent, automated and personalized, which has brought new
opportunities for home rehabilitation (HR). Sensor-based smart health
technologies focus on several aspects, including new forms of sensing
devices, efficient signal processing techniques, and machine learning
algorithms for different applications. In this survey, we summarize the
development of HR in recent years, as well as the iteration of smart
sensing technology. We manage to bridge the research in these two fields
and discuss the role of smart sensing in HR, how to apply existing sensing
technology to HR, and how to design sensing technology specifically for
HR. At the end of this survey, we discuss future research directions and
conclude the survey.
