Understanding Human-AI Collaboration in Online Communities: A User-Generated Content Perspective
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "Understanding Human-AI Collaboration in Online Communities: A User-Generated Content Perspective" by Mr. Yuanhao ZHANG Abstract: Online communities are driven by user-generated content (UGC), which plays a pivotal role in providing services for their members. Recent research has widely explored the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate the development of a rich inventory of high-quality content within these communities. However, there lacks a systematic review that examine AI support tools from the perspective of UGC, which hinders researchers from reflecting on the existing tool designs that promote humans’ and AI’s advantages and mitigate their shortcomings. This survey investigates the approaches of existing AI tools in supporting members' content contribution, consumption, and moderation. Through our analysis, we identify the key challenges motivating these AI tools for online communities and their deployed approach to address the challenges. This work also outlines research opportunities for optimizing AI's role within online communities, offering a comprehensive framework to understand its current contributions and future potential in UGC-centric environments.
