City Modelling Using Image Data and Scan Data
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "City Modelling Using Image Data and Scan Data" by Mr. Zhexi Wang Abstract: This paper surveyed the state-of-art algorithms and process pipelines of automatically city modeling from image data and scan data. There are two research directions in term of city modeling, one is to generate a large amount of models that construct a virtual city which may not represent any existing city, and the other is to reconstruct the city models that are identical to the ones in the real world. This paper focuses on the algorithms to accomplish the later task. To reconstruct models, one can use only image data and use Structure from Motion related algorithm to generate 3D model, or one can use both image data and laser scanning data to generate a more accurate model. The second method requires more data, but on the other hand it should be more accurate on the reconstruction quality. This paper focuses mainly on the algorithm to process both image data and scanning data. I surveyed several papers that cover from capturing, alignment, segmentation, modeling and texture synthesis.
