A Survey of Content Placement and Replacement in Content Delivery Networks
PhD Qualifying Examination
Title: "A Survey of Content Placement and Replacement in Content Delivery
Networks"
by
Mr. Min WANG
Abstract:
One of the striking usages of Internet is as the vehicle of content
generation, sharing and access, which the Internet was not conceived for.
Two broad classes of solutions have been proposed to support this demand,
i.e., Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and Peer-to-peer Networks (P2P).
The main focus of this survey is on the content placement and replacement
in CDNs.
Content delivery networks (CDNs) attempt to improve web performance by
delivering content to end users from multiple, geographically scattered
replica servers which are usually located at the edge of the network. CDNs
are expected to speed up the delivery of Web content and reduce the load
on the original content servers and the network bandwidth consumption. To
this end, a content provider contracts with a CDN to host and distribute
its content, and the CDN performs content replication or caching on
strategically deployed replica servers. In this survey, we explore three
vital issues with respect to effective content distribution and
management, which is crucial to the overall performance of a CDN: replica
server placement problem, which aims at choosing appropriate sites to
place replica servers; object placement problem, which determines how
many copies of each piece of content to replicate and where to store the
replicas; and content replacement strategy, which decides what cached
object should be evicted to make room for newly requested object, when
pull-based content outsourcing approach is adopted. Finally, we briefly
discuss some recent research trends focusing on how to design the future
Internet as a content centric network.
