Recent Advances in Wireless Indoor Localization
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "Recent Advances in Wireless Indoor Localization" by Miss Jiang XIAO Abstract: Nowadays indoor location-based services (LBSs) have been closely and inseparably related to people’s daily life. The most essential module in such prevalent LBSs is to determine the location of the object, known as indoor localization. With marvelous development of wireless systems in recent years, wireless technologies have been applied to support myriad of LBSs. In this paper, we survey the existing recent advances for wireless indoor localization in two main categories, namely device-based and device-free, according to whether specific device is carried by the target. The most commonly device carried by people is smartphone. With a variety of built-in hardware (e.g., GPS, camera, WiFi, FM radio and inertial sensors), this mobile platform constitutes a good possibility for indoor localization. We present in-depth analysis of corresponding techniques categorized by different modal, including schemes with single technique, and data fusion methods using multiple techniques. We also figure out the rationale of techniques relying on dedicated hardware such as Ultrasonic radar, Infrared and RFID. In addition, we comprehensively compare these techniques and summarize the results on accuracy, cost, scalability and energy consumption. For specific scenarios like intrusion detection and safety precaution when device-based methods are impractical, device-free approaches are more promising. We investigate device-free passive (DfP) localization systems leveraging Ultrasonic radar, Infrared, RFID and WiFi, and compare their performance in multiple dimensions. Furthermore, we take a first look at the emerging important technical challenges faced by both categories. To confront these newly challenges, we point out some potential future research directions.
