A Survey on Resource Allocation in WLANs with Directional Antennas
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "A Survey on Resource Allocation in WLANs with Directional Antennas" by Miss Ying Wang Abstract: Directional antennas can increase network capacity in wireless system by focusing energy on some particular directions and removing interference towards other unwanted directions. Compared to the traditional omnidirectional antennas, directional antennas have many advantages such as increasing link gain and improving spatial reuse. However, former resource allocation techniques designed for omnidirectional antennas may not be suitable for directional antenna systems. This survey focuses on resource allocation algorithms and media access control (MAC) protocols developed for directional antennas in a wireless local area network (WLAN). First, we present some basic work on improving network performance for omnidirectional antenna-based systems; then we summarize the studies on using directional antennas in WLANs to improve performance.
