Detection of Social Communities in Large Social Networks: A Survey
PhD Qualifying Examination
Title: "Detection of Social Communities in Large Social Networks: A
Survey"
by
Mr. Konstantinos GIANNAKOPOULOS
Abstract:
This is a survey of proposed models and techniques in the field of community
detection in social networks. This survey does not focus on approaches that
merely focus on the structure of a social network, i.e. the linkage
connectivity of the graph representation of a social network. We believe that a
social media community should also be related to the content that users
exchange. This is why we examine approaches and models that combine linkage
connectivity of the graph, with actual communication, i.e. messages that users
exchange and node attrributes. Also, we consider factors like communication
frequency, existence of ovelapping communities, and community membership to
multiple topics of interest. We describe the relevant models in detail and we
list algorithms and metrics they refer to. Finally, we compare the approached
with each other and we evaluate them according a list of our own criteria.
