Title: "Manifoldness Preserving Contraction"

Abstract

The contraction operation is a common manipulating operation in (abstract)
simplicial complexes. One of its most widely used application is incremental
mesh simplification using edge contractions. Ordinary contractions lack the
property of preserving the input complexes' topology. In this dissertation, a
variation is proposed. This new contraction operation produces a manifold after
contracting any edge from a 2-manifold. Its generalized version, n-simplex
contraction in d-manifolds, is discussed. It is implemented and tested in mesh
simplification applications and produces superior results.
