Title: "A Survey of Trust Construction and Calibration in Human-AI
Decision-Making"

Abstract:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly adopted in high-stake
decision-making domains. Despite the fast improvements of AI models to
date, full automation, in most cases, is not preferred. Instead, AI is
often characterized as an assistant to decision-makers and only provides
suggestions to humans This paradigm is called human-AI
decision-making\newline (HAIDM), an important form of human-AI teaming.
People's expectation of HAIDM is that a human-AI team can outperform
humans or AI alone. However, many empirical studies show that this is
often not the case. One key reason behind the failed cases of HAIDM is the
challenge for humans to establish an appropriate level of trust toward AI.
Sometimes they may have excessive confidence in AI although AI produces an
error; other times, they may disuse AI even when AI performs better than
themselves. To mitigate this problem, researchers have devoted efforts to
understanding the construction of trust and propose methods to calibrate
trust in HAIDM. In this survey, we systematically analyze recent studies
on trust in HAIDM and aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how
to promote appropriate trust in human-AI teams. Based on the literature
review, we group factors that influence the construction of human trust in
HAIDM into two categories: AI assurance and human factors. We further
analyze how various designs affect factors under the two categories and
how specific designs may help humans calibrate their trust in AI. Lastly,
we discuss future opportunities in shaping trust in human-AI
decision-making.
