Title: "A SURVEY ON THE BIOSIGNAL FEEDBACK DESIGN FOR SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP
BUILDING"

by

Mr. Zeyu HUANG

Abstract:

With the prevalence of wearable devices, it has become increasingly
convenient to capture a person’s biosignal data (e.g., heart rates, skin
electrodermal activity) in real time. Real-time biosignal data can reflect
an individual’s current states of physiognomy and emotions. Such being
effective social cues, recent HCI researchers have developed a growing
interest in their applications for social relationship building. However,
most current works are ad-hoc solutions for specific social contexts, and
they vary in design choices and aims. In this survey, I review the
state-of-the-art research in this domain and categorize them in three
dimensions: their designs of data display, the target social contexts, and
the benefits of biosignal data during the social relationship building
process with those systems. I first introduce the display modalities of
biosignal data in each work and their differences. Then I present the
target social context of each piece of design, as well as the connection
between the target context and the design choices. Next, I conclude what
each work has achieved by introducing biosignal data during social
relationship building, and how those effects are related to the specific
social contexts and design choices. Finally, I discuss several challenges
in this domain and conclude some future research opportunities in
designing better biosignal data communication for social relationship
building.
