Multimedia Delivery within the Web Services Framework

PhD Qualifying Examination

Title: "Multimedia Delivery within the Web Services Framework"

Mr. Gibson Lam

Abstract:

Web Services are the de facto standard for the implementation of
service-oriented architecture. They enable an efficient and effective
development and deployment of applications from a collection of services
in a distributed environment. Web Services are concerned with the
interoperability and reusability of its components, which are achieved
using open standards such as SOAP, WSDL and UDDI. Interoperability is one
of the major considerations for the next generation of multimedia
applications. With this in mind Web Services can be a platform for
multimedia applications development. However, current standards such as
SOAP and its HTTP binding are not sufficient to cater for this. This
report examines basic knowledge on Web Services and multimedia, and
related work on multimedia Web Services. A preliminary framework is
proposed which contains an extension to SOAP and its related protocols and
a multimedia proxy. The proxy aims to improve the efficiency of the use of
SOAP for multimedia content. The report concludes with proposals for
future research directions.
