A survey on wireless sensor and actuator networks
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "A survey on wireless sensor and actuator networks" Miss Dian ZHANG Abstract: Although wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSAN) and wireless sensor networks(WSN) are similar to some extent, WSANs have many unique features, making them more challenge and need further development. WSANs usually consist of a group of sensors and actuators. The sensors are in charge of gathering information about the physical world as they act in WSNs, while actuators take decisions and then perform appropriate actions upon the environment. In other word, WSNs are just passive reflection to the real world while WSANs can be interactive. The most important issues in WSANs are the sensor-to-actuator and actuator-to-actuator communication and coordination. In order to provide effective sensing and acting, coordination mechanisms are required among sensors and actuators. In this chapter, first we will list the unique features and communication requirement for WSANs, and make a comparative study of the protocols for WSANs. Some research problems and challenges are also pointed out in our future work.
