Title: "A Survey on Bandwidth Guarantee in Data Center Networks"

Mr. Shuihai HU

Abstract:

In public clouds, data center networks are shared in a best-effort manner among
many untrusted tenants. The lack of guaranteed network bandwidth prevents
tenants from getting predictable application performance. Recently, the
research community has recognized this problem and several works have been
proposed for achieving bandwidth guarantee and performance isolation in data
center networks.

To provide predictable network performance for tenants and fully utilize
network capacity, these works mainly aim to achieve three goals, including
bandwidth guarantee, work conservation and low latency for short flows.
Providing bandwidth guarantee can enable each virtual machine of a tenant to
get a minimum guaranteed bandwidth for sending and receiving traffic
whenever needed. Being work-conservation means the bottleneck link can be
always fully utilized as long as there are sufficient demands. Delivering low
latency for short flows is crucial for the performance of many online
data-intensive applications such as web services.

In this survey, we first introduce some important backgrounds, including 1) the
data center networks and 2) characters of data center applications. Then, we
present some representative network abstractions for expressing bandwidth
demand of tenants’ applications. After that, we discuss a few works regarding
how to enforce these network abstractions and provide bandwidth guarantees
during runtime. Finally, we conclude these works and discuss what can be
explored in the future.
