Encryption Aware Query Processing for Data Outsourcing
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "Encryption Aware Query Processing for Data Outsourcing" by Mr. Javad GHAREH CHAMANI Abstract: Outsourcing data to the cloud provides savings in costs and guarantees of availability. However, privacy and confidentiality issues often discourage owners from outsourcing their data. Although there exist fully implemented systems for encrypted database outsourcing, such as CryptDB and SDB, their increased leakage and restricted functionality have limited their use in practice. One of the most important challenges in these systems is their inability to search and perform algebraic operations (e.g., addition and comparison) directly on encrypted data. On the other hand, general-purpose solutions such as fully homomorphic encryption and oblivious RAM can support arbitrary functionalities without any leakage but their poor performance prevents their deployment in practice. In this literature review, we define and explain the model of interaction and security for computing over encrypted data in the cloud setting. We review the most important research directions and approaches in the area. We note that solutions can be categorized according to three different aspects: functionality, privacy, and efficiency. Additional guarantees may include outsourced data integrity, access control policies, and different data outsourcing architectures. For each type of solution, we attempt to identify their strengths and limitations. Finally, we propose some general directions for future research, based on the identified limitations.
