A Survey on Intelligent User Interface for the Learning of Verbal Communication Skills
PhD Qualifying Examination Title: "A Survey on Intelligent User Interface for the Learning of Verbal Communication Skills" by Mr. Xingbo WANG Abstract: Verbal communication skills — delivering messages with adaptive content and engaging vocal expression — are becoming increasingly important in many social settings (e.g., public speaking, job interviews, everyday communication). A good mastery of these skills has become crucial for both our career and everyday life. To facilitate the learning process, many researchers have tried to combine computational technologies with HCI techniques to build intelligent user interfaces. These intelligent user interfaces automatically evaluate the users’ verbal and vocal behaviors and engage users in an interactive environment for improving their verbal communication skills. In this survey, we aim to study computational methods for understanding verbal and vocal behaviors and user interfaces for effective learning of verbal communication skills. Specifically, we first introduce the social signal processing (SSP) techniques for automatic assessment of verbal communication skills. Then, new taxonomies for user interface techniques are constructed, with an emphasis on feedback designs. Next, we review the related work based on three types of feedback strategy provided by user interfaces: prior feedback, live feedback, and posterior feedback. Since visualization is widely employed in many user interfaces, we further discuss the visualization techniques for speech data. The survey ends with a discussion on future research opportunities.
