We will share our new thoughts and progress in these areas, together with demos. BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Hong-Jiang Zhang is Assistant Managing Director and Senior Researcher of Microsoft Research Asia. Dr. Zhang has been actively engaged in research and development in the areas of video and image analysis, processing and retrieval, computer vision and their application. He is well known in the multimedia research community for his pioneering work in video and image content analysis, representation, retrieval and browsing. At HP Labs, Dr. Zhang was a research manager, and created significant scientific results and technology transfers into products, as well as a large patent portfolio in the areas of multimedia content retrieval and management technologies; intelligent image processing; and Internet media. Before joining HP Labs in 1995, Dr. Zhang was with the Institute of Systems Science, National University of Singapore, where he led several projects in video and image content analysis and retrieval, computer visions and multimedia information systems. He also worked at MIT Media Lab in 1994 as a visiting researcher. Dr. Zhang has authored 4 books, over 250 referred papers and book chapters, and numerous special issues of professional journals in multimedia processing, content-based retrieval, and Internet media. "Image and Video Processing in Multimedia Systems", the book he co-authored and published by Kluwer in 1995, was the first one addressed content-based image and video retrieval research. He also filed 40 US patents. Many of these research works have become classical references in the respective research areas and formed the technology basis for several start-ups. He currently serves on the editorial boards of five professional journals and a dozen committees of international conferences. He is the Technical Committee Co-chair of the ACM Multimedia Conference, 1999. Dr. Zhang obtained his Ph.D from the Technical University of Denmark; and his BS from Zhengzhou University, China, both in Electrical Engineering.
